Canada.

AB OBJECTIVE: To share the historical experiences and challenges of a group
of Africans in Canada to set up a viable community based AIDS
organization; METHODS: Community based participatory approach:workshops,
videos, posters, theatre, music and other audio visual aids. RESULTS:
Heightened awareness of AIDS/HIV within the African Canadian community,
leading to greater involvement in combatting the spread of the pandemic
and improving the level of care for PHAs. Networking with other
community based AIDS agencies and various levels of government;
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Community based agencies in Ontario and
other parts of Canada operate within an atmosphere of system racism in a
recessionary climate when all levels of government are cutting back on
funding AIDS education and outreach; Innovative approaches which stress
self reliance and greater community accountability are crucial in the
survival of agencies such like the one under discussion; The global
nature of the AIDS pandemic demands increased international co-operation
particularly of a South-South; The special experience and skills of
ethnocultural AIDS agencies are needed within and throughout the
international AIDS prevention movement particularly in areas around
cultural sensitivity;
